GREAT SOUND : Silvertone SD50N Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar, Natural
I got this guitar as a lightning deal and I'm glad I did. Out of the box, the guitar was a beauty, though it doesn't look like the picture shown... it was actually much prettier. The headstock is small and shapely. The Nato magohany sides and back and the pickguard was a dark red. The solid top was clear and bright Sitka spruce, contrasted with the red, the guitar looked very distinct and appealing. Even the rosewood bridge was redder than other rosewood I've seen. The solid top is kinda thin compared to other solid tops I've seen, but the sound was bright, defined, bouncy and crisp. Projection was good. This guitar is also VERY light.
Playability: out of the box, the action was a bit high and the neck was a little bowed, so the setup needed a little touching up. It came with an allen wrench and instructions on how to operate the truss rod. After tightening it up a little, the action got better but still could be lower. Because of that however, there's no fret buzz at all and chords come out clean. The Grover tuners hold up well.
Fit & Finish: The gold on the tuners already had some wear on it, some of the gold had been rubbed off, which was disappointing but expected from a guitar at this price. Another concern was the strap button on the body: it wasn't even glued in! There's no screw. I don't know if they did this on purpose, but it makes using a strap a concern since the button can be pulled out and it could very easily be pulled out. If yours come like this, I'd suggest gluing it in. It does make putting on a strap easier and wearing out the strap end less but it is a hazard for the strap to come off when standing up. Another nitpick, the pointed edge of the pickguard wasn't flush with the body, another glue fix. The rest of the pickguard was glued tight though. Aside from these complaints, the fit and finish was good. The frets were dressed well and nothing was rolling inside the body.
This guitar is made in INDONESIA, not China like most guitars at this price range usually are. Given the fact that this is a solidtop, given it's beautiful sound and its adoring look, and given that all the little concerns mentioned before can be easily fixed, this guitar is a great buy for beginners to learn on and experienced players needing a backup or a solidtop 'beater' guitar. Slap on a pickup and you're ready for a gig!
